UNICAL announces 100% increase in tuition fees

The University of Calabar (Unical) Management has officially declared a tuition fee hike of over 100% for undergraduate students, according to a statement released on Monday. The institution’s spokesperson, Mr. Effiong Eyo, revealed that the decision to raise the fees was reached during an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate held on Friday.

The tuition fee adjustment will be effective for the academic sessions of 2022/2023 and 2023/2024, as outlined in the statement. Following the increment, students in non-science courses, including new entrants, returning students, and final year students, will be required to pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000, respectively. Additionally, third party dues of N36,500, N21,500, and N21,500 will be applicable.

For science courses, the new fees are N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000 for freshers, returning students, and final year students, respectively. Correspondingly, third party dues for science students will be N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500.

Prior to the adjustment, average tuition fees for students varied depending on the department, ranging from N64,050 for freshers to N52,050 for final year students, and N49,500 for returning students.

The management justified the fee increase by citing current economic realities and the imperative to uphold the academic standards for which the university is renowned.
