South African artist Tyla Laura Seethal, popularly known as Tyla, has provided insight into her admiration for Nigerian singer Asake and the inspiration behind her viral hit, ‘Water.’
In a recent interview with RollingStone, Tyla expressed her fondness for Asake’s use of “choir vocals.” She highlighted that her song ‘Water’ drew inspiration from Amapiano, a music genre from her native South Africa, her early influences in R&B during childhood, and the vibrant Afrobeats scene in Nigeria.
Tyla explained, “Amapiano music is the core of it [‘Water’], in my opinion. And just all of the influences from growing up like Rihanna and all the R&B girlies, R&B boys, pop girls. That type of influences I love bringing into my music.”
She further expressed her admiration for the step vocals in Afrobeats music, particularly enjoying the way Asake incorporates them. Tyla incorporated similar choir-like vocals into the chorus of her song ‘Water,’ resulting in its catchy and memorable nature, as she noted, “Obviously, people can’t stop singing, they can’t get it out of their minds, which I love.”
