The President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed concerns about the negative impact of social media on society and advocated for its regulation.
Representing President Bola Tinubu at the launch of a book by Babatunde Fashola, former Minister of Works, in Lagos on Thursday, Gbajabiamila emphasized the significance of accurate information in policy-making and national progress.
He cautioned against the dangers of spreading misinformation through social media, which he believes has contributed to societal division. Gbajabiamila stressed the importance of establishing a regulatory framework for social media to prevent misinformation.
Gbajabiamila underscored the role of data in policy-making for national development, stating that accurate data is essential for informed decision-making. He emphasized the obligation of his administration to engage in discussions based on evidence and rely on data for policy formulation and execution.
Regarding social media, Gbajabiamila highlighted its potential to reach millions of people globally with the click of a button, which could pose dangers to society and individuals’ security. He emphasized the government’s responsibility to ensure that engagement with citizens is based on shared understanding of truth and reality, advocating for measures to discern accurate information from misinformation.
