2027: It may not be Tinubu but power can’t return to North – Okupe

A former presidential aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, has firmly stated that the presidency will not shift back to the North in 2027.

Okupe made this declaration on Monday during an interview with Arise TV, where he criticized those advocating for a Northern presidency in the next election.

Highlighting sectionalism as a core issue hindering Nigeria’s progress, Okupe argued that previous political leaders prioritized national interests over regional biases.

Speaking confidently, he said, “I say this authoritatively and without fear of contradiction: in 2027, power cannot return to the North. That’s not how it works.”

“We follow a rotation system between the North and the South. The North governs for eight years, after which the South takes its turn for eight years.

“I’m not insisting that Bola Tinubu must remain president in 2027, but it certainly won’t be a northerner,” he clarified.
