Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, has urged public transport bus operators to collaborate with the state’s efforts to enhance the commuting experience.
During a meeting on Thursday in Lagos, which included the Ministry of Transportation, the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority, and bus operators, Giwa discussed the Bus Reform Initiative programme. He stated that this initiative aligns with the Strategic Transportation Master Plan for Lagos State and aims to restructure the current public transport system.
Giwa described the existing bus operations as disorganized, emphasizing the need to regulate and integrate the informal transport sector into the Bus Reform Initiative. He mentioned that a pilot test was conducted on the Lekki-Epe corridor, which was inspected by the Ministry of Transportation to identify traffic flow issues on the expressway and surrounding roads.
He explained that systematic frameworks have been developed to address these challenges, including the deployment of high-capacity buses on the corridor as specified in the Lagos Transport Policy and Bus Route Network. Additionally, mini buses will be registered and redirected to inner routes, and an e-ticketing system will be introduced.
Giwa urged transport operators to register with the Ministry of Transportation within two weeks, stating that registered operators would be assigned routes. He warned that any operator violating the regulations would face fines and potential vehicle forfeiture if fines are ignored.
