Nigeria’s electricity generation hits three-year high of 5,105mw – Adelabu

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that electricity generation reached a three-year high of 5,105 megawatts as of July 27, 2024. He shared this update at the first meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Power Sector Working Group in Abuja on Wednesday.

Adelabu noted that this figure represents a significant increase from the previous generation level of 4,000 megawatts. He emphasized the country’s goal to reach 6,000 megawatts in electricity generation and transmission by December 2024.

“On July 27, we achieved a record generation and transmission of 5,105 megawatts, the highest in the past three years. This is a notable improvement from the previous capacity of around 4,000 megawatts,” Adelabu said. “Our goal is to reach 6,000 megawatts by December.”

However, recent data from Generation Companies (GenCos) indicate that electricity generation in Nigeria fell by 668.5 megawatts, dropping from 5,105 megawatts to a peak of 4,436.5 megawatts as of August 5, 2024.
