Tinubu pulls out of 2024 UN General Assembly, Shettima to represent President

President Bola Tinubu will not be attending the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this year. A statement from his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, announced that Vice President Kashim Shettima will lead Nigeria’s delegation.

The statement noted that President Tinubu, who returned to Nigeria last Sunday after visiting China and the UK, aims to concentrate on domestic issues and address various challenges, particularly following recent severe flooding.

At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will present Nigeria’s national statement, participate in key side events, and engage in bilateral meetings.

The UNGA is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, 2024. This year’s theme is “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.”
