Professor Humphrey Nwosu, who served as the chairman of the National Electoral Commission (now the Independent National Electoral Commission) from 1989 to 1993, has passed away.
Born on October 2, 1941, he died in a hospital in Virginia, USA. As the chief electoral officer, Nwosu oversaw the landmark June 12, 1993, presidential election, which is celebrated as Nigeria’s most transparent election. In this election, Chief Moshood Abiola of the Social Democratic Party triumphed over Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention.
Despite being instructed to halt the announcement of results by the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida, Nwosu disclosed many results before the election was ultimately annulled.
