Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has highlighted the critical role of parents in addressing drug abuse and trafficking among youth. He emphasized that for Nigeria to effectively confront drug issues, parental involvement is essential, as they are key players in the fight against the growing drug crisis.
Represented by Deputy Senate Leader Senator Lola Yisa Ashiru, Akpabio made these remarks during a one-day sensitization event held by a joint Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives on Drugs and Narcotics in Abuja on Thursday.
He called on parents to take responsibility for safeguarding their children’s futures. The event, organized in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Drugs Monitoring (NANDRUM), included participation from schoolchildren, stakeholders, and various civil society organizations.
Speaking on the theme “Parents’ Inclusion in the Fight Against Drug Abuse and Reckless Behaviours,” Akpabio asserted that parental engagement is crucial in this battle. He noted that if drug abuse is addressed from home, society will benefit as a whole.
“By getting parents involved, we can tackle drug abuse at the grassroots level, addressing the problem before it leads to addiction or trafficking in the streets,” he remarked.
Akpabio also stated that the best legacy a parent can provide is to guide their children toward a promising future. He warned that ignoring signs of drug abuse in children can result in their lives being severely affected.
He urged parents to accept this vital responsibility with steadfast resolve, explaining that the most valuable gift they can offer their children is not material wealth, but the principles of integrity, courage, and a sense of adventure. He encouraged them to equip their children with the tools they need to face life’s challenges and avoid the dangers of drug abuse.
