The Anambra State government has promptly initiated an inquiry into the recent arrest of Franklin Okechukwu Nwadialo, the newly elected chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, who was detained by the FBI in Texas on charges linked to a $3.3 million romance scam.
Nwadialo, 40, was apprehended following accusations that he masterminded a sophisticated online scheme targeting vulnerable women in the U.S.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Nwadialo allegedly used fake profiles on dating platforms like Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café to deceive victims into transferring millions.
The scheme, which reportedly spanned several years, included fabricated crises such as military fees and family emergencies, tricking victims into depositing large amounts into accounts controlled by Nwadialo and his associates.
Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, responded to the matter, stating that the government is gathering additional information on the case.
“We initially learned about this online, and we are now investigating to understand the full scope before making any decisions. Our priority is justice and maintaining the integrity of our state,” Nwabunwanne said in an official release.
The case has sent shockwaves through Anambra, where Nwadialo’s election was seen as a hopeful step for leadership in Ogbaru. Community members have voiced dismay over the allegations, worrying about their area’s reputation.
Following constitutional protocol, Nwadialo’s deputy is expected to assume his responsibilities during the ongoing legal proceedings.
An anonymous senior member of the Anambra State House of Assembly mentioned that this leadership transition would proceed as developments unfold.
The state’s response underlines its commitment to addressing alleged corruption and criminal actions, regardless of political standing.
As the FBI investigation proceeds, Anambra officials have pledged cooperation with U.S. authorities for a transparent process.
