Borno State Governor Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum has identified inadequate Islamic studies instruction as a factor contributing to Boko Haram’s rise in the state.
Zulum expressed this view while opening a summit on Wednesday dedicated to reforming the Almajiri Education System in Borno. He explained that the summit’s purpose is to improve the Almajiri educational model, a widely practiced Islamic learning approach in northern Nigeria.
To mitigate challenges associated with Almajiri education, the Borno State Government established the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board, implementing a cohesive curriculum for Sangaya and Islamic schools.
“The Sangaya Reform marks significant progress, giving Almajiri students better prospects by including western education, vocational training, and literacy skills in Almajiri and Islamic schools,” Zulum remarked.
He added, “Esteemed guests and educational experts, our aim is to unify informal and formal education pathways into an integrated Sangaya model to enable college and university entry.”
According to Zulum, the summit provides an opportunity for participants to discuss challenges, share knowledge, and propose actionable steps to improve the Almajiri education system.
