A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Kayode Ajulo, has filed a lawsuit with the aim of preventing Governor Similalaye Fubara of Rivers State from re-presenting the 2024 budget to the state House of Assembly. The lawyer is seeking a court order to halt such actions until a suit filed before the Federal High Court, Abuja is heard and determined.
In the lawsuit (No.: FHC/ABJ/CS/1718/2023), Ajulo also urges the court to restrain the state House Assembly and its Speaker from screening and confirming the commissioners appointed by Governor Similaiya Fubara. Specifically, the lawyer requests the court to consider a motion on notice attached to the suit, which calls for the cessation of plenary sessions by 27 out of the 32 members of the State House of Assembly.
Previously reported by DAILY POST, Governor Fubara and his immediate predecessor, Nyesom Wike, had resolved to end the political crisis in the state following discussions with President Tinubu and other stakeholders. As part of the agreement, Fubara was expected to re-present the 2024 budget, already signed into law, to the returning members of the State House Assembly whose seats were declared vacant after they defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
