Equatorial Guinea’s government has initiated legal proceedings against Baltasar Engonga, the former leader of the National Financial Investigation Agency, following a sex tape scandal that has alarmed the public. Engonga, who was dismissed earlier in the year, now faces charges of misconduct after videos surfaced showing him in explicit encounters with notable individuals.
Over the weekend, Information Minister Jerónimo Osa Osa denounced Engonga’s actions as a betrayal of the “ethical and moral values” held by Equatorial Guinea. According to the government, the scandal involves hundreds of videos depicting Engonga with various women, including some married to prominent national figures.
Local media, Ahora EG, reported that the videos allegedly feature the wives of senior officials, including the president’s sister and the wife of the Director General of Police. Several encounters are believed to have been recorded without consent, raising serious privacy issues.
Vice President Teodoro Mangue has warned that similar conduct within government facilities will be met with strict consequences, stating that any implicated officials will be suspended. The government is also installing surveillance cameras in public offices and has launched an investigation to determine potential legal repercussions.
This scandal came to light during an unrelated fraud inquiry against Engonga, which led to the discovery of over 400 explicit recordings in his office. In response, the government is also assessing possible public health implications and the broader impact on the country’s image.
