Blessing same-sex marriage against God’s law – Nigerian Catholic Bishops

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) asserts that the blessing of same-sex marriage goes against God’s law. In response to the controversy sparked by Pope Francis’ directive permitting Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples, the Nigerian bishops maintain that such blessings are in contradiction to the Church’s teachings, the laws of the country, and the cultural values of Nigerians. The bishops released a statement on Thursday in Ibadan, signed by CBCN President Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, Secretary Most Rev. Donatus Ogun, and other executives.

They emphasize that the Catholic Church’s teachings on marriage remain unchanged. The bishops state that there is no possibility of blessing same-sex unions and activities within the Church, as it would defy God’s law, the church’s teachings, the laws of the nation, and the cultural sensitivities of the people.

Expressing gratitude to all priests for their support of married couples, the bishops urge them to continue sustaining the sacrament of Holy Matrimony and to refrain from any actions that would diminish the sacredness of this sacrament.
