The Nigerian military has reopened Banex Plaza in Wuse 2, Abuja, after over a week of closure. The plaza resumed operations around 2:30 PM on Monday, according to Daily Trust.
The market had been sealed by military authorities on May 18 following a violent clash between traders and military personnel. The conflict began when thugs allegedly attacked soldiers during a disagreement with a trader who had reportedly sold a defective phone. The buyer had called the soldiers to intervene.
Although the police initially attempted to resolve the situation, soldiers later returned to the plaza, prompting traders to close their shops immediately.
The military action was condemned by human rights activists, including Femi Falana, SAN, and various civil society organizations.
