The demise of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’abba, has left former Senate President David Mark in a state of shock, as conveyed in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr. Paul Mumeh, in Kano on Wednesday.
Mark expressed his deep sorrow, characterizing the passing of the two leaders as the departure of significant political figures, resulting in a substantial void within Nigeria’s political landscape.
He specifically highlighted Governor Akeredolu’s notable achievements in the legal profession before transitioning into politics, contributing significantly to the progress of his home state, Ondo, and the nation at large. Mark noted Akeredolu’s reputation as an unwavering advocate for the rule of law and human rights, emphasizing his dedication to maintaining professional standards during his tenure as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). As a governor, Akeredolu was lauded for implementing policies and programs that directly benefited the people, earning him the title of a “peoples’ governor.”
Reflecting on Ghali Na’abba, Mark acknowledged his pivotal role in the fight for democracy, crediting him with laying the groundwork for the current democratic era. Na’abba, according to Mark, will be remembered as a speaker who championed the independence of the legislature in Nigeria, standing firm during crucial moments in the nation’s history.
