Ebony First Lady vows to fight gender-based violence

The First Lady of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, has reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the rights of the girl child and combatting Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across the state. She made this statement during a road walk held on Tuesday in Abakaliki as part of the 2024 Ebonyi Women’s Day Celebration, themed “Uplifting Women for Sustainable Development.”

Mrs. Nwifuru urged residents to report any abuse cases involving the girl child, women, or children to her office for appropriate intervention.

“I want to assure every member of Ebonyi State that we will continue to defend them, especially our girls and boys. We are committed to fighting against all forms of gender-based violence. Ebonyi women stand firmly against maltreatment, whether in homes or public spaces,” she declared.

Mrs. Nwifuru emphasized her office’s readiness to address cases of abuse, saying, “If you know someone suffering from abuse or mistreatment, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We are mothers, prepared to take action. We will hold perpetrators accountable, with the legal team ready to prosecute anyone who mistreats women, children, or girls.”

She also encouraged women to recognize their worth in society by pursuing personal development and contributing to their communities.
