Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has taken aim at Aisha Yesufu, leader of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, regarding her push for women’s rights.
While discussing the issue on a TV show, Kuti shared his disagreement with Yesufu’s perspective on women’s freedom. He criticized her for advocating for Nigerian women’s liberation while wearing a hijab, arguing that such religious practices signify a departure from African identity.
On his official social media, Seun wrote, “It’s the African essence within us that’s being overshadowed by your European influence. That’s why I confronted Aisha Yesufu on TV; she was spouting nonsense, and I called her out.”
He added, “When you choose Christianity or Islam, you turn your back on your Africanness. That woman wearing a hijab, claiming to liberate Nigerian women—she should first free herself from that hijab.”
