The ongoing crisis in the Enugu State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has taken a new turn, as the state chairman, Barrister Casmir Uchenna Agbo, has rejected reports of his removal from office. He maintained that his 14-member executive committee has been granted an extension until fresh elections are conducted.
Following a recent meeting, some party leaders accused Agbo of insubordination and attacks on the party leadership. They subsequently announced the appointment of Chief Kingsley Ugwu as the interim leader until a congress is held.
However, during a press briefing, Agbo insisted that the national executive committee (NEC) of the party, led by Dr. Julius Abure, had approved the reconstitution of the Enugu State executive committee.
“Our tenure was extended for continuity and effective leadership. The NEC has informed INEC that following the expiration of our tenure, it has been resolved to extend our mandate to ensure stability and progress within the party,” he stated.
Agbo also dismissed claims of his sack, emphasizing that with the reconstitution of the committee, efforts would be made to strengthen the party and bring back members who had left.
He assured that internal conflicts were now a thing of the past and urged members to remain in the party.
“We are not suspending anyone. Bickering and crisis will not help us. We also urge our elected members to stay with the party that gave them a platform.”
When asked about Barrister Chijioke Edeoga, the party’s gubernatorial candidate in the last election, Agbo revealed that he had been advised not to accept overtures from the PDP to return to the party.
