Members of the Anambra State Police Command’s anti-crime squad apprehended a man and seized an AK-47 rifle from him. The incident occurred in Awada community of Idemili North Local Government Area of the state on Sunday, when the team intercepted the man carrying a bag. Upon spotting the police, the man attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended by the officers.
Upon searching the bag, they discovered an AK-47 Rifle with breech No. 25008266. SP Ikenga Tochukwu, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, recounted the incident in a statement in Awka, revealing that a database search revealed the recovered AK-47 rifle was not listed among firearms assigned to the Anambra State Command.
During interrogation, the suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, confessed that he acquired the weapon for a confrontation with a rival cult group.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, praised the squad for their vigilance and perseverance in recovering the firearm. He instructed for the investigation to be expanded to uncover all individuals involved in arms trafficking, including an alleged overseas financier who provided funds for the purchase.
Furthermore, CP Adeoye urged all personnel within the Command to renew their commitment to preventing and detecting crime, emphasizing their duty to serve the people of the state diligently.
