Unilorin expels student over alleged sexual molestation

The University of Ilorin, Unilorin, has expelled Mr. Mathew Balogun, bearing Matriculation Number 14/25OD062, on grounds of alleged sexual misconduct. The university’s decision was conveyed through the Unilorin Bulletin released on Monday, citing Balogun’s expulsion following the substantiation of accusations of sexual molestation leveled against him, particularly targeting vulnerable students and prospective entrants to the institution.

As outlined in the bulletin, the official notification of Balogun’s expulsion was documented in a letter issued by the university’s Student Affairs Unit, bearing Reference Number UIL/SAU/SAO/2024/01, entitled “Re: Allegation of Misconduct against Balogun, Mathew Adeboye.” The letter, signed by Mr. Moses Opaleke, the Deputy Registrar of Student Affairs, detailed the circumstances surrounding Balogun’s expulsion.

It noted that reports of sexual molestation involving Balogun had circulated on social media, prompting his summons to appear before the Student Disciplinary Committee on October 16, 2023. However, he failed to attend the scheduled hearing. Subsequently, at the second sitting on October 19, 2023, Balogun acknowledged the second charge of misconduct against him. He admitted to exploiting vulnerable students and prospective entrants through sexual molestation, with the deceptive promise of influencing their academic results or securing admissions into the university. Such actions were deemed contrary to the provisions outlined in the Students’ Information and Regulations Handbook.
