We met all requirements – Nigeria’s defence chief opens up on Canada visa snub

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa, has clarified that the Nigerian military adhered to all necessary requirements and procedures for the recent visa application to the Canadian High Commission.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday while welcoming the Armed Forces of Nigeria contingent, who won medals at the recently concluded Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada, Musa addressed the controversy surrounding the visa denials.

He criticized those questioning Nigeria’s participation in the event, stating that many of the comments were based on ignorance.

“Regarding the visa denial, we must understand that traveling abroad is not a necessity—Nigeria is good enough for all of us,” he said.

Musa emphasized that the military followed due process, highlighting that an invitation and program schedule were received, and all requirements were met.

“Members of the Armed Forces do not take shortcuts. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, the NSA, and all relevant authorities were aware of this trip, and we adhered strictly to the required procedures.”

Despite this, he noted that key personnel—including the team captain, medical doctor, and physiotherapist—were denied visas, raising concerns about the decision-making process.

“The question remains—why were these critical team members not granted visas? I am glad that the Federal Government is also looking into this matter.”
