Wike Appoints Justice Dongban-Mensem as BoT Chair of IBB Golf Club to Restore Stability
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has appointed Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, as the new Chairperson of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
The appointment is part of a broader initiative to restore stability and efficiency to the club, which has recently faced internal challenges. The newly reconstituted board was inaugurated on Friday at Wike’s official residence in Life Camp, Abuja.
Justice Dongban-Mensem takes over from General I.B.M. Haruna (rtd). Other newly appointed board members include Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, Mrs Grace Ihonvbere, S.L. Ameh (SAN), Hamid Abbo, Admiral Victor Adedipe (rtd), Chief Patrick Chidolue, and Mr Ikokwu.
Former BoT members General Haruna, King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Dr Tim Menakaya, and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe have been named patrons of the club, while Chief Philip Asiodu will no longer serve on the board.
Speaking at the inauguration, Wike stressed the FCT Administration’s commitment to revitalising the club. “We can’t stand by and watch the IBB Golf Club fall into crisis. As the owners of the golf course, it is our responsibility to act,” he said.
He tasked the new board with conducting credible elections, amending the club’s constitution, and ensuring its proper legal registration. Wike also reaffirmed that the club’s land remains government-owned, despite the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O).
Appreciating the outgoing chairman, General Haruna, Wike stated, “Your contributions won’t be forgotten. Government recognises your efforts and will continue to honour you.”
He assured the new board of full government backing: “Having the President of the Court of Appeal leading the board shows we mean business. We’ll support you fully to restore the club’s reputation.”
Justice Dongban-Mensem, in her remarks, thanked Wike for his confidence and pledged to work towards restoring unity among members and enhancing the club’s profile.
She emphasised the importance of collaboration within the board and committed to managing resources effectively to take the IBB Golf Club to greater heights both locally and internationally.
